Essential Books to Pass the 11+

Reading is crucial to improve your English comprehension

Dear Parent,

We always recommend a reading list of classic novels to our students as an essential to improve their English comprehension - however we often find students not reading enough, or reading it all without understanding it.

(This is where we see many students pass the Kent exam but not the more difficult Bexley exam)

Just reading alone has proven to be effective for some students, and ineffective for others (who struggle to understand what’s going on in the story and continue on). So we’re transforming our reading list into a series of books with exam style comprehension questions at the end of each chapter, to ensure students are understanding what they’re reading, and benefitting from the process. (Reading also becomes enjoyable when you understand the story).

In efforts to make improving your child’s scores more standardised - we are committing releasing one new "improve your comprehension" book per month - and would like every student of ours to have completed the whole series before the final exam so we can be confident they will perform well in the English section.

Our first book is chapters 1-10 of the wonderful wizard of Oz. Ideally students should get through this book, answering all the GL style comprehension questions at the end of each chapter, before we start classes in the new year.

Over the coming weeks we will release revision guides for each of the subjects that we’d also like to make compulsory for our students to have completed before the summer.
